Why Strength Training Is About More Than Muscles – It’s the Key to Ageing Powerfully

For many women, the idea of getting stronger used to be about one thing: changing how we look. Maybe it was about losing weight, toning up, or fitting into a favourite pair of jeans. And while there’s nothing wrong with wanting to feel good in your body, there comes a point in life when our reasons for training start to shift.

At We Are Fit Attitude (WAFA), strength training is no longer about chasing aesthetics. It’s about building the resilience we need to age with power, not fear.

A New Chapter Begins
WAFA recently celebrated its tenth anniversary. Ten years of women showing up, lifting weights, sweating together, and challenging what ageing is supposed to look and feel like. But this milestone wasn’t just about looking back. It was a reminder of why we do what we do.

Because the truth is, ageing comes with change. And some of those changes are hard to ignore. For many of us, perimenopause arrives with its own set of surprises: disrupted sleep, shifting moods, changing energy levels. It is a time when strength matters more than ever – not just physical, but emotional and mental, too.

This shift in focus is personal for me. After turning 52 last year, I found myself navigating perimenopause in a very real way. I won’t list the symptoms here, but let’s just say they made one thing crystal clear: I needed to be strong in every sense of the word. And not just for me. For my family, my community, and the women who trust WAFA to lead the way.

The Strength We Inherit
I often think about my mum, who is now 82. She goes to the gym weekly for Body Pump and Pilates. She is living proof that it’s never too late to invest in your health. In fact, it becomes more important the older we get. Because the alternative – the gradual loss of independence, the fear of fragility – is not something we have to accept.

We all know someone whose later years were limited by poor health. For many women, that fear creeps in quietly: a fall here, a bit of joint pain there. But strength training changes the story. It builds the kind of body that resists those limitations. It helps you stay steady, capable, and confident.

Redefining What Ageing Looks Like
One of the things I hear most from women who join WAFA is, “I thought I was too old to start.” Or, “I haven’t exercised in years.” But strength has no age limit. Our community includes women in their 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond. Some have never lifted weights before. Others are returning after long gaps. All of them are stronger today than they were when they started.

It’s not about lifting the heaviest dumbbells or running marathons. It’s about building a body that lets you do the things you love – from gardening to travelling, from playing with grandchildren to dancing at parties. It’s about walking into a room and feeling grounded in who you are.

At WAFA, we believe ageing is not something to resist. It is something to embrace. But we can do it on our terms. With strength. With confidence. With community.

This Is Your Invitation
If you are reading this and wondering if it is too late, it isn’t. If you are feeling unsure, you are not alone. Many women arrive at WAFA feeling nervous or uncertain. But that changes quickly. Because what we offer isn’t just a workout. It is a place to belong. A place to grow. A place to become stronger than you thought possible.
