The Challenges That Shape Us: Finding Purpose in the Hard Stuff

If you have ever looked around and thought, “Why does everything feel like a struggle right now?” you are not alone. For many women, midlife is a time of complexity. Work is demanding. Family responsibilities shift. Our bodies begin to change. And life, as a whole, seems to ask more of us.

At We Are Fit Attitude (WAFA), we see these moments not as barriers, but as invitations. Challenges are not always welcome, but they are often the places where real change begins.

Why the Hard Stuff Matters

Earlier this year, WAFA turned 10. To mark the milestone, we ran a community challenge: 10 movements for 10 years. It was simple in concept, but meaningful in execution. Every day, I completed the challenge. Not because I felt like it every morning, but because it mattered. Because it represented commitment, consistency, and celebration.

That experience reminded me why challenge holds so much value. When there is a ‘why’ behind what we do, showing up becomes less about willpower and more about purpose. And that kind of motivation sticks. It sustains us.

Redefining Challenge in Midlife

Challenges come in many forms. Sometimes it is physical, like training for a 10K or attending a class when your energy is low. Sometimes it is emotional, like caring for ageing parents, navigating grief, or learning how to set boundaries. At other times, the challenge is simply showing up for yourself in a busy week.

The truth is, the challenges that mean the most to us are often the ones we don’t post about. They are personal. Quiet. And they shape us just as powerfully as any finish line photo.

As one of our mindset sessions reminded us, growth does not always come with fireworks. Sometimes it ends in contentment. Or relief. Or the quiet buzz of knowing you did something difficult and made it through.

Celebrating Progress, Not Just End Results

There is no one-size-fits-all version of success. For some WAFA women, it is completing a triathlon. For others, it is drinking more water or getting out for a walk despite a heavy heart. Both are valid. Both matter.

Our brains are wired to notice what’s wrong before what’s right. That’s a survival instinct. But training yourself to celebrate effort, not just outcome, is a skill worth building. At WAFA, we call it progress with purpose.

So if you are in a season where life feels heavy, where motivation feels distant or your goals feel out of reach, take heart. Showing up is enough. Choosing one small thing that matters to you is enough.

What Will Your Next Challenge Be?

It doesn’t have to be big. It doesn’t have to be loud. But let it be something that brings you back to yourself.
