I appreciate the thought of getting out of bed in the dark, at the ungodly hour of 6am and heading to a spinning class on an empty stomach might seem unthinkable. For the last few weeks I have been doing just that, including a 20 minute bike ride to get to the studio. I’m not going to lie, it’s been harder with the darker mornings yet at the end of the workout I’ve felt invigorated, motivated and ready for whatever the day has in store. I want to convince you to give it a go, so here are 3 simple reasons why you should. Here goes…
1) Riding on an empty stomach is good for fat loss! Whilst asleep you are effectively fasting however your body is still beavering away repairing and rebuilding tissue and cells all of which requires energy. So what it can’t get from food, it will get from stored energy, the first being that found in your muscles; glycogen. So by the time you wake up this fuel source will have significantly lowered and when it does, your body will naturally turn to the next energy source. That’s right, you guessed it; your fat stores.
2) An endurance ride burns fat for fuel. When our heart is working between 65%-75% of maximal effort, that’s the point where your body has enough time to tap into the fat stores and use it for energy. That said I firmly believe a little bit of high intensity effort up to 90% maximum heart rate for short bursts is an excellent formula for burning even MORE fat too.
3) You’ll get the endorphin rush. What a way to start the day! When you exercise your body releases chemicals called endorphins which trigger a positive feeling in the body. That means you’ll start the day in a positive way, likely be more productive and certainly have a well-earned spring in your step. Before you’ve stepped in the shower, you’ll already be feeling energised and motivated to embrace the day that lies ahead.
